Walter Zamboni is an associate professor of electrical engineering with the Università degli studi di Salerno (UNISA), Italy. He graduated and got his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Università degli studi di Napoli Federico II, Italy (2001, 2004). In 2003, he was a Stager with CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, and a Visiting Scientist with the Superconductivity Group, EPFL-CRPP, Villigen, Switzerland. After a post-doc position at Università di Cassino, Italy and some teaching activities at Università degi studi del Sannio, Italy, he joined UNISA in 2008 as an assistant professor, and he is still there, leading the activities of the ESESlab (Energy Storage and Energy Sources Laboratory).
He has worked in many research fields, from computational electromagnetics applied to superconductivity and high frequency interconnects, to power converters. At present, as well as in the last years, his main research interests are in the field of energy storage and power sources: rechargeable batteries, flow batteries, fuel cells, battery modelling, diagnostics, spectroscopy and so forth.
He is a member of IEEE and IMACS. He is very active in the ELECTRIMACS Technical committee of IMACS, serving at present as Vice Chair, organizing and chairing some editions of the ELECTRIMACS conference, co-sponsored by IMACS and IEEE-IES (the next will be in Palermo in May 2026: please join!).

Lecture: Technological focus on Batteries: from cells to systems
This is a short vertical lecture on rechargeable batteries, going quickly from battery basics, available technologies and battery “elements” (cells and BMS) to real-world batteries, or battery storage systems contributing to the energy transition. Some key parameters (capacity, currents, voltages, resistance, impedance), and state variables (state of charge, state of health) are presented and then merged in a simple electric/state model, useful to understand the typical electric response of a battery or a battery system.
